Godspeed, Gentlemen, on this your maiden voyage
This is the first Final for both Alabama Men and Hounds, though that’s kinda where the shared experience ends.
- This is Tom’s 22nd year in the James Gang (since 2004), and is Haydn’s 6th. (Only the Three Stooges have logged fewer seasons.)
- This is Tom’s 12th appearance in the playoffs (a success rate of 56%), Haydn’s 4th (67%).
- This was Tom’s 5th Semifinals appearance, and Haydn’s first.
- Tom’s wins in the Quarters and Semis are his 5th and 6th playoff victories against 11 losses; Haydn’s wins in the Quarters and Semis are his first and second playoff wins against 3 losses.
One similarity: Both teams “chose” Weeks 15 and 16 to turn in their best back-to-back performances in a while. As you can see below, Men’s 247.50 combined points in the playoffs so far is their best two weeks since Weeks 7 and 8; in fact, it’s Tom’s third-best back-to-back all year. Hounds’ 235.30 is the fourth-best back-to-back weeks of their season, and their best since 277 in Weeks 4 and 5.
One oddity about Men’s playoff scoring: they did it without lining up the Week 15 QB1 against Fartz, or the Week 16 QB2 against Juice. In both games, Tom benched Trevor Lawrence in favor of Drake Maye, forgoing an extra 26 points against Fartz and an extra 7.5 against Juice. In the former, it wasn’t needed. In the latter, well… Men prevailed by just 1.3 points. Tom didn’t need them, but those extra 7.5 would’ve made for a less stressful Semi, that’s for sure. Duuu-Vaaallll!

On to the Semifinals we go, and the highest-seed still standing is #3 Alabama Men. For the fourth time in the past six years, three of the top four seeds all exited the building after Quarterfinal upsets. #1 Stooges lost to #8 Hounds, #2 Heavy Flight lost to #7 Juice, and #4 It’s All About The U lost to #5 Dollz.
First-round upsets seem more a feature than a bug around here. Going back 22 seasons to 2004, the first year in the ESPN archives:
The #1 Seed has lost 13 of the last 22 first-round playoff games
The #2 Seed has lost 10 of 22
The #3 Seed has lost 8 of 22
The #4 Seed has lost 9 of 22
And misery loves company, too:
Both the #1 and #2 Seeds have lost in 9 of 22 years
The #1, #2 and #3 Seeds have lost in 3 of 22 years
Indeed, only twice in the past 22 seasons — in 2014 and 2017 — have all four top seeds advanced to the next round. Other than that:
At least ONE top-four seed has lost in 20 of 22 years
TWO top-four seeds have lost in 17 of 22
THREE top-four seeds have lost in 6 of 22
Why it happens is anyone’s guess. HOW it happened? For #1 Three Stooges, it was only their third sub-100 performance (82.24) of the season. For #2 Heavy Flight, on the other hand, it was their fourth sub-100 (86.2) in the past six weeks. #4 The U scored commensurate with their season average (120.32 against 117.12 ppg this year); unfortunately for Jose, first-round foe #5 Dollz turned in their fifth-best score of the year (123.26).
So the Semifinals pit Hounds vs Dollz and Alabama Men vs Juice. Tom prevailed in Week 11 over Juice, 121.44 – 91.24, while The Family Thurman has split the season series: Hounds won 114.8 – 95.5 in Week 9 and Pops won 90 – 79.54 in Week 14.
The Hounds vs Dollz matchup marks the ninth playoff meeting between father and son. Here’s the rundown, which should shiver Thurm’s timbers:
- 2022 Quarterfinals: Commodes (then Campton) defeat OverThinkers; Commodes lose to Juice in Semis, who beat S*Heads in Final to claim Championship
- 2021 Semifinals: Pain Train defeats Juice, beats S*Heads in title game to claim Championship
- 2017 Semifinals: Pain Train defeats Juice, loses to Commodes/Campton in Final
- 2015 Semifinals: Pain Train defeats Juice. beats Bob’n’Weave in Final to claim Championship
- 2012 Quarterfinals: Pain Train defeats Juice, loses in Semis to eventual Champ Hurt Locker
- 2008 Quarterfinals: Pain Train defeats Juice, loses in Semis to eventual Champ S*Heads
- 2008 5th Place Game: OverThinkers defeat Possum (Commodes)
- 2004 3rd Place Game: Possum (Commodes) defeats OverThinkers
In “real” Playoff Games — ie, on the path to the Final — Sons are 6-0 against their Father. And all told, it’s still 7-1 Sons.

ESPN prematurely awards playoffs spots to The U and Fartz.
The U and Fartz have clinched playoffs spots, according to ESPN. Not so fast, my friends. Certainly, Jose and Bill have an inside track; one will secure second place in the Major Jeni Division and with it the Three or Four Seed. But it’s going to take Week 14 results to sort it out.
Headed into the Week, both The U and Fartz are 7-6 overall and Buckguys are 6-7. All three are 4-2 in the division. Jose has a huge lead in the points scored tiebreaker, up 251 over Fartz and 131 over Buckguys. Doug’s only shot at 2nd place is to win and both Jose and Bill to lose, and for Doug to outscore Jose by those 131+ points.
- The U clinches 2nd place with a win: The U would be 8-6/4-2. Even if Fartz wins to tie The U at 8-6/4-2, Jose leads in the points tiebreaker by 251 points.
- The U also can clinch 2nd place with a loss (7-7/4-2) and a Fartz loss (7-7/4-2).
- Fartz clinches 2nd place with a win (8-6/4-2), and a loss by The U (7-7/4-2).
Importantly, the scenario above are NOT the only road to the playoffs for The U, Fartz and Buckguys, as well as for Hounds, S*Heads and Juice. Once we remove either The U or Fartz from this equation (the most likely runner-up in the Jeni), there are four spots left for five bowl-eligible teams. I’ll do my best to figure out your chances in the next day or two.

Heavy Flight snapped up the fourth spot in the 2025 Playoffs with a win this weekend, and now only four openings remain. All .500+ teams are in the bracket, all sub-.500s are on the outside, and only two teams have been eliminated: Straight Outta The Commode and Over Thinkers. (What is the commonality here? Hmmm…) Of the eight yet to clinch a spot, ESPN rates their chances from a high of 88% (The U) to a low of 3% (Pain Train). But we know never to count out that guy, don’t we, Max?

Week 11: Three Stooges, Alabama Men and Dollz walk into a bar… and walk out with a playoff spot
We crowned a division champ this week. Yes, it’s Three Stooges: masters of the Mayor Jeni Division and, perhaps, lords of the Apollo as well. The fellas’ 9-2 record is built on the foundation of a 6-1 record against Apollo foes. Against Mayor Jeni division foes: 3-1. Don’t blame us Mayors that the Stooges already have clinched; this is a shared burden, ‘Gangers.
Let us note here that Dollz beat up on the Mayors to the same 6-1 tune, and Thurm’s terrific 8-3 record and share of first place in the Apollo may owe a similar debt to his own inter-divisional prowess.
So Stooges clinch the division and a playoff spot, and Dollz and Alabama Men clinch a playoff spot. Five slots remain, and at the moment Apollo teams claim three of them: Heavy Flight, S*Heads, and Hounds. From the Mayor at the moment are Buckguys (the new 2) and The U. Is anyone out of it yet? Mathematically, no.

Have U noticed how many close games we’ve seen this season? It’s All About The U, for example, is 1-3 in games decided by 5.52 points or less, and OverThinkers are 2-1 in games decided by 0.60 or less. All told, 17 games have been decided by single digits, including this week’s 113.90 – 112.74 Hurt Locker win over S*Heads.
But the Fantasy Gods taketh, and the Fantasy Gods giveth. S*Heads may have lost that game by 1.16 points, but Kurt still scored enough to keep his place in the Playoffs by 0.48 points. That half-a-point is all he needs to outscore Buckguys, and stay ahead of other 4-5 teams Juice, Hurt Locker and Fartz in the Wild Card race.

Week 8: The Groom Is In The Room
Down the aisle and into the spotlight now marches Pain Train, whose third straight win puts him in the playoff picture AND hands Three Stooges only their second loss of the year. Everything’s coming up Milhouse Maxhouse these days.
Even with that loss, Stooges’ perch atop the Mayor Jeni Division is safe — at least for a couple more weeks, if ever — and the fellas still are the playoffs’ projected top seed. Alabama Men are the new #2, however, using a win over Dollz to leapfrog Thurm into the division lead.

There’s Someone at the Door
They wore the Mark of the Beast last week (did no-one else notice his season point total of 666.02 through six weeks?), so we should’ve known that something was up (down?) with Alabama Men. Sure enough, Here’s Tommy! Your new Apollo second-place team and overall Three (Demon) Seed in the playoff standings, up from the Six Seed.
You know who else is here? Buckguys and Juice. Out of the playoff picture last week, Doug and Juice punched their tickets to the playoff party by scoring a combined 319 points in Week 6.
Three Stooges make a move, too, into the Top Spot in the projected bracket, edging the Dollz by virtue of about 46 more points scored.

Week 6: The Beat Goes On
The Big Three won again this week, running up three of the top four scores (along with Hounds — watch out for Haydn, btw) and keeping their collective hold on the top three playoff seeds. Heavy Flight and Dollz still share the top spot in the Apollo, and Jim breaks the tie with 38 more points scored than Thurm. (How many of those are Rico Dowdle’s? All of them.) In the Mayor, no ties need be broken in crowning Three Stooges, who alone command the throne.
Division games begin this week for twelve of us, a huge relief for Mayor teams who have lost games and lunch money to those Apollo bullies. Here’s no fun with numbers (if you’re a Mayor team, at any rate):
- Apollo teams are 25-17 vs Mayor teams so far, a winning rate of .595
- Apollo teams as a group scored 4,536 points against Mayor teams; the Mayors countered with 4,242
- Apollo teams as a group averaged 108 points per game against the Mayors; the Mayors averaged 101
- Apollo teams hit the century mark in 28 games; Mayors went 100+ only 23 times
- Apollo teams have had the highest score in five of six weeks: Alabama Men twice, Hounds, Dollz and Heavy Flight once each. Commodes are the only Mayor team to claim a weekly top score so far
- Five of the top seven highest scoring teams are Apollo teams: Flight, Dollz, Hounds, Alabama Men and S*Heads. Only Three Stooges and The U crack the list from the Mayor side.
- Apollo has cornered the star market, too. Of the 17 guys currently averaging 20+ points a game, 11 (65%) are rostered by Apollo teams.

Apollo teams are beating their Mayor Jeni brethren at a .600 clip so far this season, and only the Mayor’s Three Stooges seem able to withstand the assault. The fellas have crafted the same 4-1 record against Apollo teams as Heavy Flight and Dollz have against Mayor teams, putting all three into the lead (Stooges) or co-lead (Flight and Dollz) of their divisions.

Format
Eight teams qualify for three rounds of playoffs: Quarterfinals in week 15, Semifinals in week 16 and the Final in Week 17. Eight teams qualify for the playoffs: The two division winners, the two division runners-up, and four at-large Wild Card teams based on overall record and points scored.
Division winners are seeded #1 and #2 as determined by (a) overall record then (b) points scored then (c) head to head result/s.
Division runners-up are seeded #3 and #4 as determined by (a) overall record then (b) points scored then (c) head to head result/s
Wild card teams are seeded #5 through #8 as determined by (a) overall record then (b) points scored then (c) head to head result/s.
The remaining six teams are invited to play in the Consolation Ladder in weeks 15 to 17. Ante is $50, winner take all, most points scored wins. (Game results don’t matter.)
